Car | Gold Wing Motors

Any time you see your check engine light come on, it can be a stressful time because you know there is an issue to repair, but you don’t know what that issue is, and you don’t know how much it is going to cost to fix.

Your check engine light acts to alert you “check your engine” for any mechanical, electrical, or other problems with your engine. When the check engine light turns on, it is best not to ignore it as the problems discovered might escalate. Instead, you should immediately call us to make an appointment to investigate the reason for your check engine light flashing on.

This check is a fully computerized investigation and involves connecting our diagnostic tools directly to the engine. We can read and interpret the codes generated by the check engine light to determine the problem.

The entire diagnosis process is quick and will tell us exactly what the problem is. At that point, we can provide you with a written estimate as to the cost and details surrounding your repair.

Some of the common causes that trigger this engine light include:

1.) A Dirty Oxygen Sensor – This sensor measures the quantity of unburnt oxygen passing through the exhaust. When dirty, it can become faulty and have your car burn gas inefficiently and increase its emissions. When this happens, the sensor should be replaced immediately. This would be a simpler, less costly task as compared to replacing the cars catalytic converter after damage due to a faulty oxygen sensor.

2.) A Burst Airflow Sensor – Here is another sensor that can light up the check engine light. Should the airflow sensor burst, the car’s emissions increase while the fuel efficiency and mileage decrease. Unlike the oxygen sensor, though, this sensor needs a little more work to replace. Its lifespan can, however, be prolonged by regularly changing the air filter.

3.) The Gas Cap – As simple an act as tightening or loosening the cap can cause the engine light to turn on. Should you, thus, notice the light has come on, be advised to check the cap before proceeding to an auto-repair shop. The gas cap might, also, be the cause of your troubles. A cracked or faulty cap would need to be replaced too, not only deal with the check engine light but ensure no gas evaporates from the tank.

4.) Spark Plugs – If even one spark plug ceases to function, the check engine light will turn on. Luckily, replacing them is super easy should you know your way around an auto-repair shop. If you are confident of your skills and are certain a plug is faulty you can proceed and replace them.

5.) The Catalytic Converter – Lastly, we have the catalytic converter. It represents the most demanding and expensive need to rectify. A faulty converter is a significant problem that should be addressed immediately. There are also no repairs with catalytic converters. You must purchase and replace the component instead.

Of course, there are other causes that might trigger the check engine light, but the five above remain among some of the most common. A quick diagnosis will save you money down the line. Always remember to act on a check engine light when it turns on. This way, next time that pestering “check engine light” turns on, visit your Gold Wing Motors as soon as possible.
